Campobello Island

Robbinston, Maine High 81 Low 59

Today we drove to Campobello Island. It is an island that is part of New Brunswick, Canada but is accessed from Lubec, Maine. From Lubec we took the Franklin Roosevelt Memorial Bridge. Lubec is the most eastern town in the United States.
Our first stop was the Roosevelt Campobello International Park.We stopped in the Visitor Center, where we watched a film about how Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt first came to Campobello Island and inherited a small home which was enlarged to accommodate their family. The home was enlarged to it's present size and is filled with antique furnishings. The film also told about Franklin's polio and that he lost the use of his legs. He was very active before the disease. He and his family spent most summers at what was called the Roosevelt Cottage, which is in fact a rather large 3 story home.

The "Cottage".

The town across the Bay is Eastport, Maine.

The second story was bedrooms for the family and servants. We didn't get to see the third floor.

The grounds and flower beds were immaculate.

President Roosevelt's last visit to the Island was in 1939, 6 years before his death, at age 63.

The Park is the only International Park in the World.

We then drove to the end of the Island to see the Lighthouse over looking the Bay of Fundy. When we were there the tide was out, but we watched some people going to the lighthouse. They were having trouble going through the slippery rocks. We were told that you could only go to the lighthouse 2 hours before and 2 hours after low tide. After that the walkway across the beach is covered by the rising water. There was a sign that told that if you were caught at the lighthouse after the tide got too high, you could be trapped for up to 8 hours. I was told again, that the Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world.

At high tide, this beach would be covered with about 10 feet of water.

While driving through Lubec, we saw this lemonade stand. The price they are asking is way more than the 25 or 50 cents we see at home.

The scenery on the Island is very beautiful, and we thought it was a worthwhile trip.

Thanks for visiting.
