Visitors to the RV Park

It was partly cloudy today, but was still a nice day with the temperature getting to 70.

This morning I washed the truck. I still had a lot of the tar on it from our trip to Alaska. When I washed it the tar remained, so we went to Parker to Wal-Mart. We need a few things there and I wanted to get some tar remover. The only thing they had was Goof-Off. It worked quite well and I got the tar off the back fenders. Now it is nice and clean.

I started to wash the top of the trailer. When I looked down we had visitors to the Park, so I got down and took a few pictures. They followed everyone looking for a hand-out. We almost thought we were back in Oatman.

They kept wanting to get too close to take a picture.

I got the top of the trailer and the slide toppers washed. All the gunk and haze in Salt Lake made the top very dirty. I also wanted the solar panels clean for when we Boondock in Quartzsite.

 

Rod made a comment about the large houses across the river. I wanted to put a picture of the one under construction on this post. It looks like it will be the biggest one there, and is on a bend in the river. All that to live in for a few months of the year.

The river was nice and calm, with a lot of ducks swimming. There was one lonely Mallard and a lot of others that I don’t know what kind of bird they are.

Cindy spent the day working on piecing one of her quilts, but I hadn't cut enough pieces for her to finish it.

Moved to Emerald Cove

When we left Fort Mohave this morning the wind was blowing, and we were a little apprehensive, but the good thing was we would have a nice tail wind. When we got outside of Needles, the wind had almost died. We had a nice drive that took about 2 hours. It felt good to get some sunshine this afternoon. It was almost too warm for us.  Compared to the eastern US, we were hot, if 70 degrees is hot.

 

We got checked into the Emerald Cove Resort, where we will be until next Monday, when we will join the Montana Owners at Quartzsite. I got kind of a kick out of the sign on the guard shack.

This Park has 820 spaces, which is the largest RV Park we have been in. It isn't full, but there are a lot of people here. One of their signs says they have a mile of beach, and it probably is true. The only thing I had to pay for was cable at $2.50 per day. We like the Coast to Coast membership.

There are several rest rooms and showers throughout the Park. It has a Club House, two pools and a large hot tub. There is a small store on site, and a miniature golf course. We saw a group of people playing water volley ball. Every morning there is a different breakfast, which seemed to be reasonably priced. There also is a game room for kids. The staff seems to be quite friendly.

Cindy spent the afternoon sewing blocks together for a quilt she is working on. I finished trimming the blocks for her.

We are across the Colorado River from Parker, Arizona. On the Arizona bank there are some really nice homes. There is one still in the construction phase that looks like it will be very large.

 

Tomorrow we are going to drive to Parker to get some refills on meds. There is not much else going on.

Sunday Thoughts

It was a little cooler today, but it was windy all day, which made it feel a lot colder. We were sure glad we weren't traveling today. I hope it settles down tomorrow, but we only have about 80 miles to travel.

Yesterday we went to the pan-cake breakfast. They were nice large pan-cakes. I had plain and Cindy tried the pumpkin. She said they were good. We also had 2 sausages each. All you could eat pan-cakes and sausages for two of us for $5.00, along with all the juice you could drink. A price that is hard to beat. They had a very good turnout.

We talked to a couple sitting next to us. They are from near Longview, Washington. We kind of thought we were into quilt making, but they really are. She has a small sewing machine connected to a board, which she holds on her lap as they travel. They use a small inverter, and she sews as they drive. He told me about some of the cabinets he has made for her sewing room back home. He is a very talented wood worker. The pictures he showed me looked quite professional.  

Afterward we went to some yard sales. The first one was here in the RV Park, and Cindy found some nice necklaces for a good price. We found three sales others in this town, but didn't buy anything.

I filled the truck for $3.59 per gallon for diesel, which is about 20 cents less than home.

This morning we went to church, and haven’t done too much else, other than Cindy was working on some applique for one of her quilts, while I have been squaring up some blocks for one of her quilts.

Tonight I was going to smoke some of our Alaskan Salmon, but with the wind blowing it will have to wait a day or two, so Cindy is going to bake it.

Chuck and Anneke asked about the ruins at the KOA by St George. The RV Park and connecting lots were built on the Ghost town of Harrisburg. While we walked through it last year, we found a cemetery with a lot of the dates from the 1850s and 1860s. We thought it was kind of neat.

Oatman, Arizona

It was sunny and nice today. We decided to go see Oatman. We had seen it about a year ago, but it was so crowded last time, that we missed a lot of the attractions.

Oatman is located on the old Route 66. It is an old mining town in the Black Mountains of Mohave County, Arizona. It began as a tent camp soon after two prospectors found ten million dollars’ worth of gold in 1915. Oatman’s population grew to over 3500 in the course of a year. In 1921, a fire destroyed most of the buildings, but spared the Oatman Hotel, which was built in 1902. The Hotel is the oldest 2 story structure in Mohave County. It is famous as one of the honeymoon stops of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard in 1939. In 1924 the major employer shut down operations, and in 1941 The US government ordered the discontinuation of the remainder of the gold mining operations. The town was completely bi-passed by 1953, when a new road was built from Kingman to Needles, California. By 1960 the town was all but abandoned. In recent years, the town has grown into a tourist destination because of interest in the old Route 66. Also, wild Burros freely walk around the town and can be hand fed carrots and Burro chow.

We were actually quite warm on our visit today, but I noticed many of the native Arizonians wearing coats. I guess it is all in what you are used to.

We went through many of the shops, and one had a western singer that was excellent. We found out from the shop keeper that he was once part of Waylon Jennings group. We came back later, and there was a lady tourist singing a song by a karaoke type screen. She was singing a Patsy Kline song, and everyone asked her if she was professional, but she replied “no,” She was that good. They both got rounds of applause when they finished.

Hard to believe she's 90 years old. I should be in as good of shape when I'm 90.

We went in one shop, and got talking to the teller. She told us that she was almost 91 years old, and I found out that she was born the  year after my mother. My mother wasn't in that good of condition for several years before she died in 2012. And here this lady was still working, and had no plans to retire.

We got lots of Burro pictures, and found a pen that had some very large turtles in it that we had missed last time.

We watched the gun fight that is put on Saturdays at noon and 2:15. It was a good day for sightseeing. Cindy  got a photo of one of the actresses.

Made it to Fort Mohave

Yesterdays drive.

This is on old pioneer building at the KOA.

Cindy went out this morning and took some pictures of the mountains by the RV Park. We both like the red colored rocks.

The water hose for the fiver froze this morning, and I couldn’t shut off the valve, so I had to tell the office to watch it because as soon as it thawed out, water would spray everywhere.

We finally got out of the cold! It was a nice day to drive, but first we had to stop at Scrap Apple Quilts in Bloomington (by St George). It is one of the better quilt shops in the area. We have always liked it and it is pretty easy to get into and out of with the trailer. It is at the Bloomington exit just south of St. George by Wal-Mart. They had all Christmas fabrics on sale for 40% off. They also had a lot of $6.00 fabric. Of course we had to buy some. Cindy also got some patterns that were on sale.

These last two photos are what we bought today.

So an hour later we were on our way. I was afraid the traffic going through Las Vegas was going to be bad, but it wasn't too bad.

 

There is a lot of desert country getting here, but the truck kept showing warmer and warmer temperatures outside. We finally got here at about 4:00 this afternoon and it was 70 degrees. Short sleeve weather for sure. I hope it keeps up.

I looked on my phone and it shows snow in Salt Lake all night and a high of 34 today. It looks like we left just in time!

When we got here the office manager told us there was a Blue Grass thing in the rec hall at 4:30, and we were invited. We went and they were pretty good. There is also a $2.00 all you can eat pan-cake breakfast tomorrow at the rec hall and we plan on going.

This park has over 300 sites, and from the activities schedule we got there is a lot going on. The people seem to be friendly and it looks to be a nice park. Our Coast to Coast charge was $3.00 for the 3 days we will be here.

I’m not sure what else we will do tomorrow, so I will have to let you know.

Starting South

  

Near St George, Utah High 56 Low 30

Today we drove about 280 Miles. We are at the KOA in Leeds, Utah. It is a Coast to Coast Park, and is costing us $3.00 for one night. The hazy condition lasted about the first 125 miles, and then started to get a little warmer.

We made a stop at the Cheese Factory in Beaver. It is one of our favorite places to stop as we travel through this part of Utah. They always have samples of various cheeses, some of which are quite tasty. We bought a bag of fresh cheese curds. They call it squeaky cheese, because as you eat it, it seems to make a squeaky sound as you chew, but it has to be fresh and not older. There is lots of room to turn around, so stopping is no problem.

Most of the way snow still covers the fields. By the time we got to Beaver, the temperature was up to 40 degrees.

We got here at about 2:30, and it was up to 55. It felt so much nicer than what we have seen for the last month. The low is supposed to what our high has been for the last month.

Monday we were afraid we might not get to leave. Tammy called us and said that she was one her way to the emergency room, with shakes, and they were afraid she was having a heart attack. But after checking her out, they couldn't find anything wrong. She was there so long, that she was feeling better and went home. She said she was there for about 4 1/2 hours, and saw medical people for maybe 20 minutes. I said on my post a little over a year ago, that if I ever went to the emergency room again, I would be carried in and not on my own power. While we were at the hospital, I told Tammy how I felt about emergency rooms, and she didn't think it was funny. But after waiting over an hour for x-rays, which she finally declined, she felt the same way I did. She finally told the medical people that she had enough and was going home.

Anyway, we got on our way today and I think Cindy is as glad as I am to get out of the bad air and into somewhere a bit warmer.

We hope to make it to Arizona tomorrow, where we will stay for a few days.

Ready to Travel

Riverton, Utah High 39 Low 21

We had a Happy New Year and hope you had the same. We watched a movie with the kids and then went to bed watching one on TV. At about 10:30 the firecrackers started and didn't let up till about 2:00 (according to Cindy, I slept through most of it).

We spent most of today getting ready to leave tomorrow. About all that is left to load is the stuff that will freeze. We will load that in the morning, and then get on our way heading south, and hopefully somewhere warmer and out of all the haze.

We have a reservation for tomorrow night in St George, then for a few nights in Fort Mohave, Arizona.



I said a few days ago that I would put pictures of a Quilt I had finished as soon as Cindy got the binding done, so I am putting them on tonight.
The picture of the back shows the patterns better.

We are looking forward to traveling this coming year. We hope to meet some of the people we met last year and would like to meet some more.
