Ya’ll Did Good

Ya’ll Did Good
Biloxi, Mississippi High 67 Low

Penny had a visitor this morning.

While we were in the Biloxi Visitor Center we listened to a recording about the Legend of the Ring Tree. It goes as follows: An Indian princess was in love with a brave from a rival tribe and asked her father, the chief if she could marry him. Her father would not give his permission because the two tribes were enemies. She kept after him and he stood firm. When she continued to bother him about marrying her love, he finally told her that when a certain oak tree grew a ring, she could marry him. That night, there was a terrible wind storm and the limbs of the tree were blown together to form a ring. When the chief saw the ring, he decided that there must be some magic in the tree, and he allowed his daughter to marry her love. The Ring Tree, as it is known is still standing today and one of the bigger branches has a definite hole growing in it. We thought the story was interesting.

We stopped by the old cemetery close by and Cindy got several pictures of the old head stones and above ground graves.

We then went to a restaurant suggested by the lady at the Visitor Center. It is called McElroy’s Harbor House Seafood Restaurant. We both had Po Boy sandwiches. Cindy had shrimp and I had crab. They were both served with very delicious fries, and they both tasted very good.

The restaurant is right next to the dock where there were several boats selling shrimp.

On the way back to the RV Park, we passed a gas station that had diesel for $3.149 and I decided to fill the truck even though I could have gone further. This was the least we have seen for gas or diesel this whole trip.
After that we passed a Walmart and remember we need catsup, so we stopped. While we were there we decided to get some lunch meat and might as well get some cheese. We bought a few more things, and when we went to check out, I mentioned to the checker that we came in for a bottle of catsup. The final bill was a little over $37.00. He laughed and said “Ya’ll did good”. We all laughed.

Tomorrow we leave here for Louisiana.

Biloxi Visitor Center and Wooden Sculptures

Biloxi, Mississippi High 73 Low 48

Today we drove in to the Visitor Center in Biloxi. It is also a museum, but it looks more like a southern mansion. It is located across the highway from a light house.

We learned more about the wooden sculptures by the artist Marlin Miller. After Hurricane Katrina, a lot of the old trees along the coast were broken off and killed, so he spent three years sculpting the broken trees into works of art using a chain saw. He carved over 40 trees stretching 40 miles along US Highway 90 into works of art. We only got to see a few of them, but they are very nice.

We also took Penny to play on the beach and she had fun again. The Visitor Center told us that if we wished, we could bring Penny into the building and museum and that if she had any accidents we were to let them know and they would get it cleaned up. Talk about southern hospitality.

Outside the Visitor Center there is a statue of Pierre Le Moyne Sieur d’Iberville, a young Canadian sent by King Louis XIV to find the mouth of the Mississippi River. His explorations in 1699 led to the colonization of the Mississippi coast and the Louisiana Territory.

The sculptures and Visitor Center made an interesting day.

Mississippi

Biloxi, Mississippi High 73 Low 64

Today we had a fairly short drive to near Biloxi. We only drove west for 2 hours, but we are headed toward home.We are staying at the Martin Lake Resort. We plan on being here for three nights. There are a few things we want to see while we are here.

After we came into Mississippi, there is an Information Center on the Interstate. I went in first and got some information on Biloxi and Cindy wasn't going to go into the Information Center but was only going to use the rest room. I told her she needed to see the Center, as it wasn't like any other we have ever been in.

It almost looks like a museum inside. It is very elaborate and even had curtains on the upstairs windows. The stairway to the second floor looked like you might find in a very expensive home.

Cindy had to take a few pictures.
You can't tell from this picture, but the windows in the three dormers have curtains on them.

This Park is OK, but nothing special. All the sites have concrete where you park your camper, but they are a touch short to park the fifth wheel and the truck. They are level and all the roads are paved. There is a lot of what look like full time people and there are even two FEMA trailers in the Campground. The lady in the office is very nice and answered any questions I asked. For the amount of sites, there is only one rest room, which might not be enough for almost 150 spaces.

The price was right though. With 50 amps and cable TV, it cost me just under $5.00 a day with Coast to Coast. There is also free internet in the whole Park and it is even fast.

Thanks for visiting.

Gulf Shores

Robertsdale, Alabama high 72 Low 57

Today we decided to drive to Gulf Shores, first to check out the only quilt store in the area, and second to let Penny play on the beach.

The quilt store was unique in that it was the basement floor of the owner’s home. Actually it was at ground level and she lived on the second floor. We have been surprised at the lack of quilt stores in this part of the country. There are about 25 in the whole state of Alabama. We have more than that in just the Salt Lake Valley. (One store told me Salt Lake is the quilting capital of the US.)

We then drove a little further south and found the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama. It is the furthest south point in Alabama. The beach is a nice white sand beach and as usual, Penny had a good time digging in the sand. This time she would dig a hole then put her face in the hole, all the while she was watching the surf to make sure she didn't get wet.

On the way to the beach we passed Lambert’s Café, the home of the throwed rolls. We thought about going there for an early dinner on the way back from the beach. Cindy told me she was going to open a can of soup for dinner or I could stop at Lambert’s, my choice. What do you think she wanted to do?To make a long story short, we stopped at Lambert’s.

We have been to the other two Lambert’s in Missouri, and knew they had good food and lots of it. If you leave there hungry, it’s your own fault. We filled up on the pass arounds, eating very little of the meal. We took home enough food for two more meals. The hot rolls were delicious with the apple butter they passed around.

All the waiters were very friendly!

Tomorrow we are diving about an hour west to Biloxi, Mississippi. We are going to stay there for 3 nights to kind of relax.

This is the first speed limit sign you see coming into the RV Park we are staying in.

Made it to Alabama

Robertsdale, Alabama High 66 Low 46

It was a nice day without any problems. We are presently at the Wilderness RV Park with Coast to Coast. Total cost for 2 nights was $4.40, because of the upcharge for 50 amp power. The sites in this Park are long but kind of narrow, but will be OK for the 2 nights.

We don’t know what we are going to do tomorrow, but we might just relax for the day and do nothing.

I filled the truck with diesel for $3.359 per gallon. It took a little over 83 gallons and I got about 10 miles per gallon. It was down a little, probably because of the head wind we had getting to Marianna.

Last night was kind of chilly, but it is supposed to warm up some for the rest of the week.

Sunday Pictures

Marianna, Florida High 63 Low 36

Last night it got cold enough that I had to turn on the heater. Today was sunny, but cold.

We went for a walk through the Park at about dusk and Cindy got some nice pictures of the trees in the lake by the RV Park. It looks like pictures of the Everglades. We saw several small fish in the water.

There was a young man fishing from one of the piers. He caught one, but while doing something, the fish managed to get off the dock back into the water. We were close enough to hear his disappointment.

We took Penny with us and she got so cold and was shivering so much that I put her into my jacket. She sure has got it made.
Tomorrow we go further west into Alabama, where we will stay for two nights, and then on to Mississippi.

We are slowly headed toward home and are now down to only one month. After Christmas we plan on spending some time in Arizona.

Thanks for visiting.

Going West

Marianna, Florida High 57 Low 36

Today was as cold as we have had for a long time. Whenever we stopped, we had to wear jackets. Poor little penny shivered every time we took her out. It is warmer in Salt Lake City for the second day in a row. It was a little windy and while we were north bound, it wasn't the best driving. After we turned west on Interstate 10 the wind was a head wind, which made better  driving conditions, but I’m sure the truck didn't get very good mileage.

We made it to the Arrowhead RV Park. It cost just over $20.00 a night using Passport America. It is a nice park with large sites. It doesn't look to be very full. When I called about it last week, I was told to just come in as they would have plenty of room. When I checked in, the lady checking us in told me to take my choice of 10 or so 50 amp sites. This Park is a real RV Park and not just a place to stop overnight like the one last night.

We are located about one hour west of Tallahassee. Cindy told me it now fills like we are headed home (at least we are headed in the right direction). The weather is almost the same as at home. LOL

We will stay here 2 nights and just hang out, then stay in Alabama for 3 nights.

I’m not looking forward to the drive across Texas. It looks like it is over 875 miles on Interstate 10 before it goes into New Mexico. I have never seen the Alamo and hope to be able to when we get near San Antonio.

We will be staying at an RV Park near New Orleans and want to see a little of the town while we are in Louisiana.

Thanks for visiting.
