Quilt Stores November 7, 2013

Sutherlin, Oregon High 57 Low 43

It rained hard most of the night and today. It is supposed to be partly cloudy tomorrow.

In the site next to us, now one is at home, except this very large Jack Rabbit. He has posed for me several times, but is very nervous, if I happen to get too close. This is my wild life picture of the day.

We decided to go see the local quit stores and help out the local economy today. It wasn't a good day for sightseeing anyway. The first store is in Sutherlin. The people running it were very nice and tried to answer any questions we had. We found out from them that there is a new store in Sutherlin a little ways away, which is the Pfaff dealer. It is called Chicks and One Rooster.

Cindy had some questions about her embroidery program and was in hopes they could help her. They told us they didn't know the program that well, but they have 2 ladies that come in on Tuesdays to give lessons. So I guess we are going in next Tuesday for 5D Embroidery Software lessons. We talked about that if the lesson goes well and Cindy thinks she is learning the program to her satisfaction, we might stay here another week so she can take the next lesson. I guess it is good to not have a set schedule.

We then went into Roseburg to get some of Cindy’s prescriptions filled at Wal-Mart.

We then went to the Quilt store in Roseburg. It is a very large store. Cindy got a photo of one row of two with all batiks. They have lots of nice quilts hanging one the walls. There was one example of a pattern sewn with four different colors of material, which gave it an entirely different look. They are all quilted differently also, which also changes the look.

They also have little signs us that made us chuckle.

Cindy bought this kit and some close-out material. Like I said, we had to help out the Oregon economy as much as we could.

A lot of batiks.

This is one example of the quilts that we both liked. The quilting is excellent.

Right now it is still raining.

Moved to SKP Park November 6, 2013

Sutherlin, Oregon High 63 Low 52

This morning was a lot warmer than it’s been. The sun actually came out part of the day.

We went back to the little Cafe in Laketown for breakfast. We both decided on Biscuits and gravy.  With glasses of milk for both of us, the bill came to $7.98. We didn't think that was too bad, and the breakfast was huge. I still recommend this little cafe.

Cindy got some picture of the lake which the RV Park is by. It is quite a large lake. She also got a picture of our site in the park.

We left at about 10:00 for a 2 hour drive to the Escapee Park in Sutherlin. When we got here the office was closed for lunch, and we had to wait about 45 minutes for the office person to get back from lunch.

After we got set up, I wanted to get fuel and see a quilt store. I picked Cottage Grove, which is about 30 miles away and also has a quilt shop. I paid $3.629 per gallon, which is $.35 per gallon less than around here. I averaged almost 13 miles per gallon, and put in $338.00 worth of fuel (just over 93 gallons).

After we filled with fuel, we went to the quilt store. It is called Dee Dee’s quilts, and is run by a couple. The gentleman was running a quilt machine almost like mine, but his is all by hand. He really is very good at it. He showed me a small flower pattern he had put on a quilt using pink and white thread on the top at the same time.  I might just have to try doing it that way sometime. I thought, at first, that it was variegated thread, but it has a different look than variegated thread.

After that we came back to the Escapee Park and came upon a flock of wild Turkeys. I went back to where they were to get some more pictures.

By then it was starting to get dark, but I came upon 2 deer in the park. I tried to get a good picture of them, but didn't have enough light to get a good pictures, so forgive me for the blurry shots.

Lunch and Another Lighthouse November 5, 2013

Lakeside, Oregon High 55 Low 48

It rained all night again. It was dizzily pretty much all day.

This is the Park we are stay in.

We wanted to try fish and chips on the coast, and I asked the receptionist if she knew a good place to get them. She told us that the little cafe in Lakeside had good food for a reasonable price. We had seen their home of the $5.00 dollar dinner on the way to the RV Park, and with her recommendation we went there. It looked busy, so we decided to try it. It was every bit as good as she said it was. Their prices looked very good on the rest of the food they served. If you are ever in the area, it is well worth a stop. It is located on 8th street and Lake Road in Laketown. It is a little off highway 101. I don’t know where else you could buy a biscuits and gravy breakfast for $1.99, but we might try it tomorrow.  The fish and chips cost $6.99 and there was enough food that neither of us felt like having dinner tonight. We had thought about driving to Coos Bay or Reedsport, but this was only 1/2 mile away from us. They actually have $3.99 and $4.99 menu items.
This was a lot of good food.

After lunch we went to the Umpqua River Lighthouse. Unfortunately the museum and light house were closed for tours today, so we didn't get to go in. The information sign, which I have included, say that the light can be seen for 19 miles. It was originally built in 1857, and was destroyed by flooding in 1861 and rebuilt and illuminated by 1894.

The ocean that we could see looked quite rough today. The picture I put on is the waves going up the river. The picture is fuzzy because of the rain and fog.

Short Move November 4, 2013

Lakeside, Oregon High 52 Low 45

I’m beginning to see a pattern in the weather. It rained most of the night, was not raining for about 2 hours this morning, and then rained off and on the rest of the day. At one time it was raining a lot harder than anything we have seen while we have been in Oregon. It still beats the snow and cold they have had in Utah.

We left the Casino at about 12:00. We had about a 50 minute ride to the next RV Park. This one is Osprey Point RV Resort. We came here with Passport America for about $22.50 per day. This is a little more than I was expecting, but like everything else, the prices have gone up since Passport America published its book. This price does include cable TV with about 75 channels, 50 amp power, and Wi-Fi at our fiver. It is pretty fast internet.

After we got parked and hooked up, we drove to Coos Bay to see one of Cindy’s old transportation directors from Ogden Utah. She worked for First Student in Ogden and requested the transfer. Her name is Becky, and she and Cindy had a short, but nice visit. It has been three or four years since she moved to Coos Bay. She is now the transportation director for First Student (the school buses in Coos Bay).

We then went to Wal-Mart for a few things, and then tried to go to one of the quilt shops in Coos bay, but for the winter it is closed on Monday. We don’t know if we will get back to this particular store, but we shall see.

The three lighthouses I had on the post the other day are:
First: Yaquinq Head Lighthouse. It is 3 miles north of Newport. It is a 93 foot tower 162 feet above sea level. It is the tallest on the Oregon coast, and was first illuminated in 1873.
Second: Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. It is at the north end of Yaquina Bay bridge in Newport. It was in service for only 3 years, from 1871 to 1874, before being replaced by the brighter Yaquina Head lighthouse. It is 42 feet tall and 161 feet above sea level.
Third: Heceta Head Lighthouse. It is located 13 miles north of Florence. It stands 56 feet tall and is 205 feet above sea level. It was first put in service in 1894, and is now the brightest light on the Oregon coast.

This is a picture explaining how the lighthouses were put into law.

We then went back to the fiver and are relaxing after our grueling drive today. LOL

Lighthouses and Rambling November 3, 2013

Florence, Oregon High 52 Low 45

It rained quite a bit of the night again. Today was partly cloudy in the morning and more rain this afternoon. Our daughter called this morning and said it was snowing in Salt Lake. Rain is better than snow anytime.

Last night we had to turn all the clocks back for the end of Day Light Savings time. The bad thing is that it takes me a while to get used to the clock changes. And yes, it reminds me of the old joke: You cut one end of the blanket off and sew it onto the other end to make the blanket longer. (Somehow it doesn't work.)

We plan on moving a little further down the coast tomorrow (about 30 miles). We are really burning up the highway going south. LOL Our plan right now is to stay in Lakeside for 3 days and then move over to the Escapee Park in Sutherlin for almost a week. Nothing is set in stone, however. We plan on getting home sometime around the 15th of the month, but that is still subject to change, depending on the weather.

Tonight I have included some pictures of some of the Oregon Lighthouses we have seen on this trip. We missed some of them in the north part of the state. The first picture is of the lighthouse north of Newport. The second is on the south end of Newport. As you can see from the picture, it was built into the living quarters and sit on a small hill. The third one is about halfway between Newport and Florence. It is a ways away from any town, and we couldn't drive up to it like the other two.

To the right is the fire look-out tower.

Thanks for visiting.

Another Rainy Day November 2, 2013

Florence Oregon High 54 Low 45

We had rain most of last night, but when we got up and going there were large patches of blue sky. The sun came out for a while. It did rain off and on all day. The forecast is calling for more rain until next Thursday, but not too cold at night.

We went to see the quilt store here in Florence. There were two of them, but one had closed down the middle of October. The lady that ran it said she was retiring and going to travel. (We did catch her at the store.)

In Florence there is a small restaurant called Jerry’s Hot Rod Grill. It is lined on top with a lot of old Chevy front ends. They are lined up from 1955 through 1962 in order. I thought it was kind of neat. I’m afraid Cindy wasn't too impressed. If these cars were complete, they would be antiques. I guess it shows my age, when I realize I owned some of them when I was younger.

We got back to the fiver in time to go to the lunch buffet this afternoon. It was supposed to be $9.99 each, but when we went to pay, the cashier told us someone had extra coupons and our lunch price was taken care of. Wow! What a welcome surprise.

Right now it is lightly raining again.

Sea Lions and Beaches November 1, 2013

Florence, Oregon High 63 Low 52

Yesterday
Today we expected rain, but woke up to …Sunshine. Right now it is starting to get cloudy to the north and  the weatherman on TV is predicting a worse storm than the last one. We wanted to go back north and see if the sea lions were out that we had seen on the way south. There were some, but not as many as yesterday.

Today
I have also included some of the pictures Cindy took in Newport. We were walking around the harbor road and heard barking and followed the sound to where there were sea lions.  When we were there it was a nice sunny day, and there were lots of sea lions sunning themselves. There is a large bunch of rocks in the harbor that was covered with sea lions. We also saw some that were swimming toward the rafts that had been placed by the dock. The sea lions were lying around sunning themselves about 15 feet below us. I think Cindy got some very good pictures of them.

There were signs that told about them. It said the males got to about 1000 pounds, while the females were about 250 pounds. Some of the ones we saw were huge.

Today we also went to two beaches. The first north of Florence and the second one was 10 or so miles south.

The first beach was close to where we saw the sea lions swimming in the ocean. It is in kind of a protected area that comes in a ways from the ocean. There are some large, what looks like volcanic, rocks with the ocean waves hitting them.

The second beach is at the Oregon Sand Dunes Federal Park. There was a sand dune we had to go over to get to the beach. When we got near the beach, we found it was covered with lots of broken shells. We did manage to find some good shells to take home with us. Most are not very colorful, but we thought the little grand kids would like them. If you look around Cindy, you can see the broken shells.

The beach stretched both ways for miles.

The white spot behind me was a broken shell.
