Painted Rock Petroglyph Campground High 81 Low 50

Today we answered hitch itch and moved toward Mesa. We had
heard about this campground from someone at the Casino parking lot, and decided
to see it. It is a BLM campground with table and fire pit at each site, and not
much else. The normal rate is $8.00, but with Golden Age Pass it is $4.00.
There is a small hill with all the petroglyphs on the rocks. Some defacing has
been done since the Indians were here. I saw one rock with someone’s name and
dated 1967. Others were dated 1915, and 1909. There are far more petroglyphs
than recent carvings though. The petroglyphs are only on the East and South
faces because the rest of the hill looks like lava. We are staying here 2
nights, and then to Mesa.

Where we are camped. |
To get to this campground, you exit I8 at exit 102, then go North 11 miles to the turn off for the campground. It is about 1/2 mile off the pavement to the campground. The spaces are far from each other and it is very quite. We are going to chill out here for a couple of days. I'm not sure chill is the right word, because in the sun it is quite warm.
