Still More Quilts

Riverton, Utah       High 93 Low 69

We finally got past all the 100 degree temperatures. A lot of new records were set in Salt Lake this summer including most 100 degree day in August. The last while, we have had a lot of smoke from all the California fires and the air quality has been really bad.

We have both been busy (me with a lot of honey does). I feel like I am constantly working on the sprinkling system. Cindy works a lot on keeping the yard looking nice, and I have been doing more quilts. I hope you don't get too tired of quilt pictures but I have put some pictures of two Christmas quilts I finished. The first is a throw and the second a king size.

Here it is on our bed.

Cindy doesn't think it quite fair that she spends 6 month embroidering and piecing a quilt that only takes me a week to quilt. The large quilt is probably the heaviest quilt I have ever worked with, I give Cindy a hard time about it weighing 100 pounds but it really isn't that heavy. However, the way it was made, I had to lift the hopping foot on my machine to get over the joint of the blocks and still couldn't get over all of them. It did turn out quite nice.

Another to do was the stained glass panels. we were going to get a Stained glass place put the hangers on them, but I decided I could do it with my soldering gun. I got them hung and we think they add a lot to our sun room.

On one of my older post I mistakenly called a cucumber plant a squash and said how big it was getting, but now it is huge and has grown clear across our side walk.

Cindy says it is a Lemon Cucumber and we have had quite a few of them. they taste very good.

Penny got a hair cut a little while ago and looks a lot better.

The only problem is that she gets cold at night and has to sleep under the covers next to me. Penny is not too spoiled (yes, she is ).

More Quilting and We went Out to Have a Sandwich

Riverton, Utah       High 91 Low 60

We both have been staying busy. Cindy has what she calls "her daily deep cleaning".  I have tried to stay busy quilting. About once a week I go to the grocery store and use their pick-up service.

This evening we decided to go to one of our favorite restaurants, a place called The Philadelphian. They have a Philly sandwich way better than any we found in Philadelphia. We used a 2 for 1 coupon and got 2, 8 inch sandwiches and a large order of home style fries. The sandwiches give us 2 meals. Half a sandwich and the fries is way more than we need to eat, but are they delicious.

This place has dine in, but is now take out only because of the virus. I guess that seems to be the new normal. We found some shade and ate in the car.

Some of the quilts I have finished are a motor cycle quilt that will be a Christmas present and Another quilt which we helped our Canadian neighbor in Yuma finish. I think it turned out very nice but we are not sure they are going to be able to make it to Yuma this winter so when she can get it is unknown.

Me setting up the computer to do the quilting.

We made one using the same panel but ours is a throw, while this one is for a queen size bed.

This is the motorcycle quilt. The center part is poofed up rather than just flat.

While we were cleaning our storage room, we found some cabinet doors with stained glass inserts which we decided would make a good decoration for our sun room. I need to find someone to make some kind of hooks so we can hang them in front of our windows. We both like stained glass and feel they will be a good addition. They originally we hanging in my old house that got torn down and we saved them from at least 15 years ago.

There are 6 of them.

Finally Quilting

Riverton, Utah    High 87  Low 64

We got a little rain this afternoon. It was a little cooler than it has been.

We have been working hard since we got home and the yard finally looks like we have done something. One of the past posts showed a big mess in the back yard, which is now gone.

It looks a lot better.

Cindy got a lot of flowers planted and her pots placed and filled with mulch. She says she is waiting until fall to plant them.

This squash is getting big, but so far no squash.

Cindy's tomatoes are quite large and we have had a few cherry tomatoes.

We both think the back yard looks a lot better than it did with all the weeds.

We also finally got the carpet re-stretched and it looks a lot better. I don't know why it took so long to get anyone here to do it, but the man that came out did an excellent job and I thought it would take him a lot longer than it actually did.

These next pictures of of a Lonestar quilt I finished. Cindy has been sewing down the binding.

I am now working on a dog quilt. I added extra batting where each dog's picture is, and it make the dogs really pop out. I have tried to show how much on the pictures, but they really don't show what I wanted.

This edge view kind of shows how high the dog pictures stand up. Hopefully one of the great grand kids likes the quilt. We don't know which one will get it.

Thanks for visiting.

Still Staying Busy

Riverton, Utah        High 93 Low 62

Since we have been home we both have been working hard to get our home back in shape.

We finally got rid of all the weeds and hauled the tree trimmings to the landfill to be made into mulch. While I was there I got  load of mulch to cover the outside of our back yard and to fill the large pots Cindy put out for flowers.

I had repairs and painting to do in two bedrooms that we will turn into guest bedrooms in our basement.

Cindy is almost finished with the mulch and I got through with the painting.

Now we are trying to get a bid to re-stretch some of the carpet in various parts of the house. I seem to have trouble getting a bid from the first carpet place I called, it has been almost two weeks since he looked at it, and so today I called someone else. I hope they are not too busy to take my money. I would like a bid and we want to get the stretching done. We have moved some of the book cases and curio cabinets, so we would like to get them put back in place.

Right now we are glad we are not in Arizona where not only is it going to hit 120 degrees, but the coronavirus seems to be adding lots more cases every day.

It seems like Cindy and I are busy every day and I told her that lately Home Depot seems to be my favorite store.

Today I hauled a carload of stuff that Cindy decided we had in storage too long to the local charity store. We have been trying to get our storage room so it is not so cluttered. We both feel like if we haven't used it for 10 years, why keep it.

No pictures today but I will try to get some next time.

Back In Utah

Riverton, Utah                  High 84 Low 60

We decided to come back to Utah for several reasons, not the least was the temperature. It got to 109 in Yuma today and looks to stay hot. Also I have been watching the count on Yuma County coronavirus and it has been going up a lot for the last little while. There have been well over a hundred new cases every day for a while with 233 added  today alone. The total is now at 5364 with the hospital at capacity. We felt we would be safer in the Salt Lake City area.

We have both been working almost none stop since we got home. The first day Cindy picked a garbage can of weeds and has had me trim some of our trees.

We have got quite a large pile of leaves and weeds.

Penny has been feeling better and has to check out everything. Since we got back to Utah, she doesn't want to be left alone. If we go outside, she follows us. When we come inside we have to be careful because she will be right behind us.

We have been clearing out some of our planting area so Cindy could put out some pots we bought a long time ago at a yard sale. The kids buried them in our back garage and we finally were able to get to them.

The largest pot is going to go in the middle of the planting circle in our walk-out patio. Cindy and my daughter Paula thought it would look good there. I need to build the circle up with more dirt before we can take the pot down the stairs.

Any way, we have been busy working almost non-stop and we are both getting wore out.

Update On Penny

Yuma, Arizona               High 109 Low 69

It has been very warm again.

After her tooth extraction, Penny wanted to be held all the time. She did get better about taking her medications. We finally finished the last of the antibiotics last night so she doesn't have to have them any longer.

When we put the cone of shame on her she would go into a corner and look at the wall and just sit there. We are sure she thought we were punishing her. We didn't put it on very often except at night for the first few nights and that is part of why we held her as much as we did.

She finally quit trying to chew her foot and we haven't had to put it on her lately. She is eating better and acts like she feel a lot better, however she still swallows most of her food whole. I guess that's not unexpected with not many teeth. We are glad to see her feeling better.  She has a follow up Vet appointment next Tuesday and then we plan on leaving next Friday for Utah.

We have been working on a quilt kit Cindy has had for a while. It had some fairly easy paper piecing in the middle part of the blocks. We did get it finished although this picture only shows the blocks.

Cindy thinks with all the protests and coronavirus going on, that we should have a cabin somewhere in the trees with a little stream running past it off somewhere all by ourselves.

We are both looking forward to some cooler temperature in Utah.

Thanks for visiting.

Still In Yuma

Yuma, Arizona               High 111 Low 80

From the temperature here it is a good thing for an AC that works. We don't go out much and we are glad we are in a house and not our fiver.

Yesterday Penny had an appointment with the Veterinarian for teeth cleaning and we thought a few teeth pulled. I had to have her there at 7:15 in the morning and they told me they would call when we could pick her up. It is kind of like pick-up at the grocery store: when you get there you call and tell them you are there and they send someone out to pick up Penny. They are masked and they take her inside.

After about 30 minutes I got a call from the Veterinarian to tell me that when they x-rayed Penny's jaw, the infection and decay was a lot worse than they thought at first and that their estimate of charges was going to be about double what they thought last time. Instead of being a thousand dollars, it was going to cost up to two thousand. I ended up paying eighteen hundred. Of coarse I told them to go ahead. They told me they had to pull 21 of her teeth which is one half.

Finally at about 1:00 I got a call to pick her up at 2:30. She was still a little groggy. they told me that the pain killer they gave her was good for 24 hours and to give her more this morning. By about 10:00 she started to hurt but I didn't dare give her the pain killer, so Cindy and I and Penny all  had a bad night. Also they cautioned me about not letting her scratch her jaw, so I put the cone of shame they gave me on her for the night. We were afraid that while we were sleeping she might do some damage to the stitches. We still have to watch her but as long as we hold or watch her we haven't put the cone back on. Right after I first put the cone on her, she somehow got out of it and I had to tie it on better.

With her pain meds she acted a lot better today but we can tell she is still in pain She isn't eating much but is doing a little better. She sure wants us to hold her most of the time.

The vets want to look at her on the 16th, so we will be here at least till then. We are hoping it doesn't get much warmer before we are able to leave.

We did finish another UFO. This time a nursery rhyme embroidered quilt. There were two sizes of blocks and we didn't have a pattern, so we had to figure out how to lay it out.

I think it turned out pretty well.
